The self titled debut album from Royal Blood, a British duo who have burst onto the scene with a heavy-hitting rock album that displays exactly what two guys with a drum kit, bass guitar and a voice can do.
Made up of Mike Kerr (Bass/Vocals) and Ben Thatcher (Drums), Royal Blood deliver a sound that would be something totally unexpected for a group lacking the traditional electronic guitarist. Despite this “core” instrument not being there, Royal Blood create a fantastic sound that combines so many bands that have come before.
Royal Blood’s sound is so great that before their album had even released, they had played some of the biggest music festivals in the world - South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Glasgow, Glastonbury, T in the Park, and Reading Festival. As well as supporting Arctic Monkeys for two shows in May 2014, and being nominated for the BBC Sound of 2014.
It’s fair to say that Royal Blood are the next big thing in rock music, and this new album does nothing to detriment their rise to glory.
Throughout the whole 10 track album, listeners are presented with catchy riffs, and choruses that you can’t help but sing along too.
In between accidentally catching your singing or bopping along, comparisons can be drawn to Queens of the Stone Age and Deftones. But more than both of those bands, Royal Blood could be the next coming of The White Stripes. With distorted and high squeals coming from Kerr and his bass, it seems like the album was completely written by Jack White.

Although comparisons can be made, the music that Royal Blood has produced for this record is all their own, with a unique sound and unique way of doing it, Royal Blood have become trendsetters in the world of Rock music.
Highlights from the album include singles “Little Monster” and “Come On Over”, which are both heavier tracks, don’t let the heaviness distract you though, both tracks are as equally catchy as the rest of the album. “You Can Be So Cruel”, is another of the distorted type tracks on the album, and builds up to loud chorus, before hitting listeners with yet another catchy riff. The stand-out on the album though would have to be the most commonly heard track, “Figure It Out”. From the first 10 seconds, this track already had me bouncing, from then on it just gets better and better. The whole song is topped off with a cool as hell chorus, that really accentuates Royal Blood’s talent and individual style.

This album is the first you’ll hear from Royal Blood if you aren’t already a massive fan, and let me tell you, it definitely will not be the last time we hear from the most talented rock duo in the game since The White Stripes.
P.S. If you are wondering where the comparison to The White Stripes came from, listen to “Loose Change”, where the lyrics sound like they are being sung by Jack White himself, and “Careless”, which sounds like a faster pace version of “Icky Thump”.
